Russia prevented the passage of a US draft resolution in the UN Security Council on not deploying nuclear weapons in space.

Russia used its veto power in the UN Security Council against the draft resolution of the United States and Japan on not deploying weapons of mass destruction in space, after rejecting the amendments requested by China and Russia. China abstained from voting, while 13 countries voted in favor of the draft.

The First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, pointed out that “the United States and Japan had previously refused to include Russia and China’s amendment in the text of the draft resolution, which included a call not to place any weapons in space at all, neither weapons of mass destruction, nor Conventional weapons, nor any space systems.”

Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzia said, “The purpose of the US-Japan draft resolution is to politicize the issue, to support the United States’ baseless accusations against Russia and to try to put Russia in an uncomfortable position.”

He added, “The United States wants to avoid any commitments that would prevent it from doing what it is doing now, which is developing weapons systems that can be deployed in outer space.”

Washington and Tokyo had prepared a draft resolution for the UN Security Council calling on countries not to develop nuclear weapons or other types of weapons of mass destruction intended to be placed in orbit around the Earth or in space in any way.

Russia and China proposed an amendment calling on all countries to “take urgent measures to permanently prevent the deployment of weapons in outer space and threats to use force in space, from space towards Earth, and from Earth towards objects in space.” But it was not accepted.
