Nearly 2 million people could benefit from this measure.
Between the alarmist talk about the state of French finances and the multitude of different ideas for raising some taxes, there is little (possible) good news. Even when they’re just cooking. However, if the time has come to look for new recipes, all is not dark and some wallets might even be relieved a little soon.
While it’s hard to believe in the current context, a tax paid by thousands of French people could actually disappear next year. The proposal is not unanimous, but some deputies have said they are in favor of this possibility. It still remains to be definitively validated.
In France it is not just the tax offices, town halls, departments and other municipalities that collect taxes. Other organizations also require some families to pay them money each year. This is the case, in particular, of the Regional Center for University and School Work, better known by the acronym “Crous”. In preparation for the start of the school year, all students (excluding scholarship holders) must pay a fee: the Student Contribution and Campus Life (CVEC).
Every year its amount increases at the same rate as inflation. Therefore, for the year 2024-2025, the price amounted to 104 euros. According to data from the Ministry of Higher Education, approximately 1.7 million students had to pay this fee. But maybe it was the last time.
Socialist and environmentalist deputies have proposed eliminating this contribution. The idea was adopted in the Finance Committee and will now have to be submitted to the vote of Parliament and the approval of the government. In 2023, the same proposal was validated in principle but was not accepted by Elisabeth Borne.
While on paper the idea appeals to students who struggle to have financial resources during their studies, it is not unanimous. The CVEC allows you to finance social, health, medical and cultural actions in student life. Its removal “would penalize the most precarious students”, according to centrist MP Charles de Courson. The left would like to compensate for its repression with an increase in tobacco taxes.
