A stellar quartet to open the eighth edition of the Estartit Jazz Festival

Double bass player Javier Colina, saxophonist Perico Sambeat, drummer Marc Miralta and pianist Albert Sanzconsidered four of the great musicians of the Spanish jazz scene, will open this Thursday at 10 pm in Paseo del Molinet the eighth edition of the Estartit Jazz Festival, while presenting his work Universos. The contest will continue until next Sunday in a format that presents a total of four evenings with two concerts each featuring protagonists of the caliber by double bassist Avishai Cohen, singer Kurt Elling and bassist and singer Richard Bonawho will share the bill with promising young Catalan jazz artists.

The inaugural concert will be preceded in the afternoon by a free concert by Hip Horns Brass Collectivea brass band made up of musicians from up to three different generations, which combines hip-hop, jazz, gospel, funk and rhythm-and-blues in an “explosive, energetic and modern musical cocktail”, as detailed by the festival, with which they will kick off the eighth edition on the roof of the Fishermen’s Confraternity, at 7:30 p.m. on Passeig Marítim 1, at the beginning of Passeig del Molinet.

The second day, tomorrow Friday, will feature Richard Bona. Grammy winner, the Cameroon-born bassist, percussionist and singer is a world artist and his music is a crossroads between African rhythms and jazz. “Imagine an artist with the virtuosity of Jaco Pastorius, the vocal fluency of George Benson, the sense of melody and the harmony of Joâo Gilberto; if you mix it all with African culture, you have Richard Bona”, the newspaper wrote about him Los Angeles Times. His creativity and energy on stage reach the audience unfiltered. The musician arrives at l’Estartit after having to cancel the concert he planned to give there in 2021 due to the pandemic.

That same Friday afternoon, the emerging trombonist and composer Alba Pujals will present himself with his quintet to offer the public his first record work, Apologia, recorded between 2020 and 2021 in Barcelona and New York. The trumpeter Joan Mar Sauqué, former student of the Municipal Music School of Torroella de Montgrí, accompanies Pujals in his Festival debut.

An old acquaintance from the festival, the Israeli double bassist and singer Avishai Cohen, who already performed in the first edition of Jazz l’Estartit, held in 2014, will be the protagonist, on Saturday night, of the third day. Cohen returns to the Costa Brava this year accompanied by his band to present his latest work, Irokoan album in which the musician immerses himself in a vibrant Afro-Caribbean rumba.

The Ramon Cardo TM Collectivemade up of a group of musicians linked to the Taller de Músics de Barcelona, ​​will open this third day presenting a program of original arrangements of the music of Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, John Coltrane, Horace Silver i Donald Byrdin addition to a series of own themes.

Sunday, on the last day, the festival will present Kurt Elling, considered one of the best male jazz singers today. The American musician arrives at Estartit with guitarist Charlie Hunter to present his work SuperBlue, with which they explore a sophisticated funk and soul sound in a set of new songs and innovative versions of compositions by Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard or Cody Chesnutt. At the evening concert, the young violinist and singer Élia Bastida will present her album tribute to one of the great jazz violinists of the 20th century: Tribute to Stéphane Grappelli.
