Researchers advocate “conservation gardening” to boost the populations and genetic variety of endangered plants.

The simplest ideas are not always the best followed. To preserve biodiversity, German researchers recommend planting local flowers, rather than oleander, palm trees or other exotic species. In a study, published in the review Scientific Reports , they claim that if more gardeners, professionals and individuals, opted for conservation-relevant plants, the overall level of threat to flora in Germany could be reduced by 25%. Other countries could of course benefit from the same approach – which scientists call “conservation gardening”.
