Seoul National University students are receiving a ‘1,000 won meal’ at the cafeteria in the Seoul National University Student Center in September last year.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs) announced on the 25th that it has selected 186 universities to participate in the ‘1,000 Won Breakfast’ project in 2024.

The ‘1,000 Won Breakfast’ project is a project that supports the formation of healthy eating habits by providing healthy breakfast for 1,000 won to young people (college students) who have a high breakfast skipping rate (59% as of 2022). This year, the government support unit price was increased from 1,000 won to 2,000 won, and 16 of the 17 metropolitan cities and provinces across the country have also established additional support plans worth 3.8 billion won, which is expected to ease the burden on universities.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and 186 universities nationwide are participating in this year’s ‘1,000 Won Breakfast’ project. 76 schools in the metropolitan area including Konkuk University and Kyonggi University, 12 schools in the Gangwon region including Catholic Kwandong University and Gangneung-Wonju University, 34 schools in the Chungcheong region including Konyang University and Daejeon University, 21 schools in the Jeolla region including Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology and Gwangju Women’s University, 40 schools in the Gyeongsang region including Dongmyeong University and Dongseo University, Jeju National University of Tourism, Jeju National University, etc. There are three schools in the Jeju area.

In particular, this year, the government’s unit support price was increased to 2,000 won, and 186 universities, 42 more than the previous year, participated in the project. The government announced that it is expected that more students will be able to enjoy quality breakfast in the new semester as the participation of universities that have previously had difficulty applying due to financial conditions increases.

Meanwhile, college students’ perception of the ‘1,000 Won Breakfast’ project, which allows them to enjoy a high-quality breakfast at an affordable price, was found to be positive. As a result of the 2023 survey (140 schools, 5,711 people), 90.4% of respondents said that they ‘felt the importance of breakfast’ through this project, and 90.5% said that it ‘helped with healthy eating habits’.

Choi Myeong-cheol, director of food policy at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, said, “This year, we have actively reflected opinions from universities and significantly expanded the support price and number of people, and we plan to diversify the operation method so that students can use the support even during vacation periods for schools they wish to use.” “As the scale has increased, we will strive to provide high-quality diets by further strengthening management to improve the quality of the diet through the operation and inspection of a student ombudsman and promotion of excellent diets,” he said.
