The “Environmental Education Tree” was planted in the lakeside area of Ioannina symbolically on World Forestry Day, by the Epirus branch of the Panhellenic Union of Educators for Environmental Education (PEEKPE), in collaboration with the Green Department of the Municipality of Ioannina and the Deputy Mayor of Education and Volunteering Stefano Sinto.
The action was an initiative and sponsored by PEEKPE for the benefit of future generations and the children of the city, while students of the 20th and 9th Primary School of Ioannina participated in the planting.
The planting of the “Environmental Education Tree” is symbolic and was proposed by the PEEKPE of Epirus to take place in a central part of the Pier (near the boats), with the aim of highlighting the central importance of environmental education from a young age for the formation of values, attitudes and children’s attitudes towards the environment, the cultivation of respect in public space, the development of active citizenship and the recognition of the value of urban greenery.
The action will continue with the “Greening of schoolyards”, where trees will be granted for the yards of ten school units, qualifying those with the greatest lack of greenery.
