Prominent Tunisian lawyer Sonia Dahmani, who is known for her criticism of Tunisian President Kais Sayed, was today sentenced to two years in prison on charges of insulting her country, Reuters reported, citing her lawyer.
The sentence was linked to Dahmani’s comment to local radio that Tunisia was a “racist country“. Her comment is about clashes between migrants and local residents.
Dahmani has been in prison since May, serving another sentence. In September, she was sentenced to eight months in prison for saying that Tunisia was “not a good place to live”.
This month, President Qais Syed won a second term in office with 90% of the vote. He defeated two other candidates, one of whom was in prison. The opposition in the country claims that the elections were a farce.
Sayed’s opponents are calling for calm after the elections, as well as the release of political prisoners and journalists. They accuse him of taking power through a coup after closing the Tunisian parliament in 2021 and ruling the country by presidential decrees, BTA writes.
Qais Syed said after his election victory that he would continue his fight against people he described as “corrupt, traitors and skeptics”.
