And typographical error has caused that millions of emails addressed to Pentagon personnel were sent unintentionally in Mali in recent years, as confirmed this Monday by the United States Department of Defense.

The error occurred because e-mails with destination .mil accounts, address of accounts US militarywere sent to .ml accounts in Mali, a political and military ally of Russia.

The Pentagon pointed out this Monday in a statement that it is aware of what happened and that it takes “seriously” all unauthorized disclosures of national security or unclassified information.

Invalid domains

In this same note it was specified that the Pentagon has applied policies, training and technical controls to ensure that emails from the .mil domain don’t go to wrong domains.

“Although it is not possible to implement technical controls that prevent the use of personal e-mail accounts for government matters, the department continues to provide training and guidance to staff,” he concluded.

The Pentagon’s deputy spokeswoman, Sabrina Singh, specified in a press conference that none of the emails that reached these Malian accounts they started from an official US military account.

If an email is sent by typographical error to an .ml account, he pointed out, this message is returned.
