Abbas announces: I will not support the Citizenship Law

by time news

At the end of last month, the Citizenship Law of Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked went up to the Ministerial Committee on Legislative Affairs, where it was decided to postpone the vote. As you may recall, the contacts between the Minister of the Interior and MK Rotman on the nature of the law have exploded several times in the past and it is not yet clear whether the two will be able to reach an understanding.

After last week the Knesset plenum approved the Electricity Law, according to which it will be possible to connect a residential building, built before 2018, located in the area defined by order, electricity, water or telephone even without the existence of a building permit and completion certificate for that building, a new challenge is facing the coalition. Ra’am chairman MK Mansour Abbas announced today (Saturday) that he does not intend to support a law that will go to a vote tomorrow.

In an interview with Dafna Liel on the “Meet the Press” program on News 12, Abbas said he did not intend to vote for Minister Shaked’s citizenship law, “We formed the government and brought Ayelet Shaked and others to be ministers, she is not just the interior minister of Jewish citizens.”

As you may recall, at the end of the summer session a few months ago, Minister Shaked’s citizenship law came up, including the temporary order that is supposed to prevent family reunification between Palestinians and Israelis. The law was put to a vote as a compromise with the coalition, and was supposed to be extended for six months instead of one year. In the end, 59 supported in front of 59 opponents and the offer fell through.
