MILAN, Italy – Christopher Nkunku has officially joined AC Milan, a move he described as an immediate and enthusiastic decision, signaling a fresh start after a challenging period at Chelsea.
Nkunku’s transfer to Italy was a swift choice for the French international.
The forward arrived in Italy this summer, with AC Milan investing 43 million euros, including bonuses,to secure his services. Nkunku, who was developed in Lagny-sur-Marne, is looking to put behind him two challenging seasons with Chelsea. His time at the london club was hampered by persistent injuries in the 2023-24 season and limited playing time, especially in the Premier league.
A Decision Made in an Instant
This difficult context undoubtedly influenced Nkunku’s choice to depart London. Speaking to AC Milan’s official media, the former RB Leipzig player revealed he didn’t hesitate when the opportunity to join the Italian club arose.
“The first time I heard about AC Milan was special for me. I didn’t think too much, I said yes promptly. I just wanted to hear about the project – and it happened,” Nkunku stated. The big question now is whether his move to Milan will provide the platform he needs to regain his form and secure a spot on the French national team for the upcoming World Cup.
Nkunku’s departure from Chelsea concludes a transfer that never truly materialized into its potential. Signed in June 2023 for a reported £52 million, the forward suffered a pre-season knee injury that delayed his debut until December. He managed only 10 Premier League appearances, scoring one goal, and struggled to consistently impact the team. Chelsea, under multiple managerial changes, found it difficult to integrate him into a cohesive system.
the move to Milan represents a significant shift for Nkunku, who now joins a club with a rich history in European football. He will be expected to lead the line alongside Olivier Giroud, another French international, and contribute to Milan’s ambition of challenging for the Serie A title. The transfer was finalized on July 31, 2024, with Nkunku signing a five-year contract.
