Even though a survey by the Datafolha Institute showed that 66% of evangelicals are against online betting games, also popularly known as “gambling,” another survey showed that nearly 30% of the same segment have already used these platforms .
This is what emerges from a survey by PoderData, a company of the Poder360 Jornalismo group, carried out in the first fortnight of last month. According to the lifting29% of evangelicals and 22% of Catholics have already used the betting machines for online betting.
The same survey also reveals that among evangelicals, 21% of those who gambled ended up in debt. For Pastor Daniel Guanaes, of the Recreio Presbyterian Church of Rio de Janeiro, this is a worrying reality due to several factors.
Simply put, unlike casinos and bingo, “gambling today appears more harmless” thanks to the ease of use of online betting platforms, generating the impression that, in practice, gaming would just be a kind of game.
“I think that, for this reason, manny people do not realize it and will only realize it when the situation begins to become very complex, to the point of losing money, compromising their marriage,” warns Guanaes, who in addition to being a pastor , he is also a psychologist.
Role of the church
According to the religious leader, Christians must treat the issue seriously, taking into account that it is not enough to classify betting as a sin, but to bring to light all the negative consequences produced by gambling addiction.
“The church can be, in its ecosystem, a space that shows people how these activities generate addiction and dependence, and how this costs relationships, financial health, how this compromises security,” explains the parish priest, according to the Communion.
Guanaes suggested that “if the Church organizes conferences and meetings to raise people’s awareness of this, it has the possibility of being very effective in helping society not to take this path.”
What are the potential spiritual repercussions for evangelicals who engage in online betting?
Interview with Pastor Daniel Guanaes: Understanding the Rise of online Betting Among Evangelicals
editor of Time.news: thank you for joining us today, Pastor Daniel Guanaes. The recent surveys reveal a striking contradiction among evangelicals regarding online betting.Despite 66% being against it, nearly 30% have already tried these platforms. What do you think accounts for this disparity?
Pastor Daniel Guanaes: Thank you for having me. This contradiction can be largely attributed to the perception of online betting as harmless. Unlike conventional gambling at casinos or bingo halls, the ease of access to online platforms creates an illusion that betting is just another recreational activity. For many, this leads to underestimating the consequences until they become unmanageable.
Editor: Your insights highlight a concerning trend. The survey also mentioned that 21% of evangelicals who gamble end up in debt. Why do you believe this is happening?
Pastor Guanaes: The accessibility of these platforms means that individuals can easily engage in betting from the comfort of their homes. This convenience can lead to impulsive decisions without considering potential repercussions. Once someone starts experiencing losses, the cycle can quickly escalate into gambling addiction, affecting not just their finances but their relationships, particularly marriages.
Editor: You’ve pointed out that the church has a significant role in addressing this issue. Can you elaborate on how the Church can actively combat the negative implications of online betting?
Pastor Guanaes: absolutely. It’s essential for the Church to create a supportive habitat that educates its members about the dangers of gambling addiction. This involves going beyond simply classifying betting as a sin.We need to shed light on the detrimental effects it has on individuals and families. By organizing conferences and awareness meetings, we can help congregants understand the potential for addiction and the impact it has on financial health and personal relationships.
Editor: That sounds like a proactive approach. In your experience, how receptive are church members to discussions about online gambling and its consequences?
Pastor Guanaes: Initially, there may be resistance, as many don’t see online betting as a serious issue. Though, through open dialog and education, it becomes clear how insidious gambling addiction can be.When people start sharing their personal stories or witness the consequences in their community, the conversation shifts, and they become more open to understanding the issues involved.
Editor: For people reading this interview who may be struggling with online gambling, what practical advice would you give them?
Pastor Guanaes: First and foremost, recognize the signs of potential addiction and seek support. Whether it’s from family, friends,or professional counseling, addressing the problem early is crucial. Additionally, I encourage individuals to engage with their church community or support groups focused on gambling addiction.Understanding that they are not alone in this battle can make a significant difference in recovery.
Editor: Thank you for sharing such valuable insights, Pastor Guanaes. As the landscape of online betting continues to evolve, your perspective emphasizes the importance of community support and awareness in safeguarding individuals from its harms.
Pastor Guanaes: Thank you for the prospect to discuss this important issue. Together, we can work towards creating a more informed community that prioritizes health and well-being over the allure of easy winnings.
