More than 20 people were killed in a magnitude 5.6 earthquake that struck Afghanistan’s Baghdad province on the border with Turkmenistan. In addition to the casualties, hundreds of homes were destroyed.

“Unfortunately, initial reports indicate that 22 people, including women and children, were killed, and four others were injured,” said Muhammad Sarwari, a government official in Badgis province. “Taliban authorities have reached some of the places affected, but it is a mountainous province, and the death toll could rise.” Servuri also added that heavy rain that hit the spot exacerbated the situation.

According to the state emergency department, over 700 homes were damaged, and most of the injured were hit by broken or cracked bones.

The quake struck at a depth of 30 kilometers, according to the Seismological Institute.

As you may recall, Afghanistan is already in a state of humanitarian crisis, and most of the population is on the verge of starvation. This is against the background of the hasty withdrawal of the Americans and other Western forces from the country and the rapid takeover of the Taliban. Thus the residents were hit by the earthquake in a much more severe way than in a normal situation.
