Fourth year of life for Africa Games Week, starting tomorrow 23 February until 25. After being postponed compared to November, AGW debuts in Cape Town with events in presence but also online with conferences and virtual panels. The purpose of the event is present and feed African videogame productions, a sector that is experiencing great ferment on the continent. The gaming market in Africa is under development and is expected to grow 12 percent annually by 2026, four times the global annual rate. 60 percent of Africa’s population is under 25, and by 2030 the United Nations expects this figure to increase by 42 percent. The spread of broadband internet is on the rise in the continent, which will have more than 680 million smartphone users by the end of 2025, thus pushing the video game industry forward as well. Already today, in the region, there are 177 million regular players on mobile, 95 percent of the total. As a result of these trends, Africa is the fastest growing area in terms of mobile game downloads, according to research firm App Annie. Among the partners of the Africa Games Week event are Xbox Game Studios, Steam and Focus Entertainment.
