The 59-year-old British patient was infected with an early version of the corona virus and was unable to get rid of the virus due to a weakened immune system. He was sick for 411 days, and is believed to have suffered from the virus longer than anyone else in the world and survived.

The patient, who has a weakened immune system after a kidney transplant, was first tested positive in December 2020. Despite the loss of symptoms, he continued to test positive until January 2022.

Medics at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London say they are not aware of any other recorded case of a person being cured after such a long time.

A drug that helped Trump

They used genetic analysis to determine that the patient still had an early version of the original Wuhan strain—one that had long since been overtaken by Alpha, Delta, and Omicron in the general circulation. Only after they identified the variant could they treat him with Regeneron, the same drug that helped Donald Trump fight the disease.

The same team also treated a patient with an underlying health condition who died after testing positive for 505 days. In both cases, genetic tests showed that the patients were not reinfected.

Dr Luke Blagdon Snell said: “There are a number of new variants of the virus that are resistant to all the antibody treatments available in the UK and Europe.

He also added: “There are people with a weakened immune system who are still in the risk group for severe infection. We are still working to understand the best way to protect and treat them.”
