As a result of Hanwha Life Insurance’s analysis of insurance payment data over the past 10 years, brain and heart-related insurance payments increased for those in their 60s or older, and the incidence of ‘arrhythmia’ increased for those in their 30s and 40s.

On the 27th, Hanwha Life Insurance announced that as a result of analyzing about 30 million insurance payment data over the past 10 years, the number of insurance claims for cerebrovascular disease increased 1.8 times and the number of insurance claims for heart disease increased 2.2 times compared to 10 years ago.

This increase is mainly driven by the elderly in their 60s and older, and in particular, heart disease is found to occur more often in men than in women.

Among cerebrovascular diseases, the disease with the highest incidence was ‘cerebral infarction’. The rate of increase in the elderly was high, and the number of cerebral infarction cases in those in their 60s increased 2.4 times from 1,349 in 2014 to 3,302 last year. The number of people in their 70s increased 3.3 times from 447 in 2014 to 1,499 in 10 years.

The same goes for ‘brain hemorrhage’. The number of cases of cerebral hemorrhage in those in their 60s more than doubled from 620 in 2014 to 1,260 in 2023, and in those in their 70s or older, it increased 3.2 times from 142 to 469 in 10 years. On the other hand, the age group under 50 showed a similar or even decreasing trend.

Heart disease in particular showed a steeper increase in men than in women. Over the past 10 years, men have had more heart disease than women. Additionally, compared to 10 years ago, the number of women doubled, while the number of men increased by 2.3 times.

Among heart diseases, the disease with the highest number of insurance payments is ‘angina pectoris.’ It accounts for about 44% of all heart disease insurance payments last year. That’s almost half. The increase in the number of hospitalized and outpatient patients and the increase in the number of patients in their 60s or older are believed to be the main causes.

The most notable disease is ‘arrhythmia’. The incidence of ‘arrhythmia’ is increasing in all age groups, and among heart diseases, the incidence rate is high in people in their 30s and 40s.

Last year, 38.9% of people in their 30s and 40s who filed heart disease-related insurance claims with Hanwha Life Insurance suffered from arrhythmia. This was only 28.0% 10 years ago in 2014, but it has increased by more than 10 percentage points in 10 years.

Arrhythmia is a disease that requires attention because it can suddenly cause an acute heart attack while exercising vigorously without knowing the underlying heart disease, even at a healthy and young age.

Jeon Gyeong-won, team leader of Hanwha Life Data Lab, said, “There are statistics that show that the leading cause of death after the age of 70 in Korea is arteriosclerotic vascular disease, that is, heart and cerebrovascular disease. As confirmed through this analysis, life and non-life insurance companies are currently fiercely competing. “Customer needs in the fiercely competitive third insurance market, especially for products that cover brain and heart diseases, will grow further in the future,” he said.
