The Southern Customs Department of the State Revenue Committee continues its relentless fight against the illegal import of cigarettes from the Islamic Republic of Iran.

As reported by the SRC, another major case was revealed the other day. In particular, 880 packs of undeclared cigarettes were found as a result of the inspection of the driver’s cabin of the truck that arrived at the Meghri customs point. Customs officers suspected that there might be a large amount of cigarettes hidden from customs control in a truck loaded with cement. In order to carry out a detailed customs inspection, the truck was escorted to the temporary storage warehouse of the Southern Terminal PB Company, where as a result of the control, around 10,000 packs of cigarettes were found among the cement bags.

Thus, from January 1, 2023, 84 cases of illegal transportation of a total of 47 thousand 543 packs of cigarettes by concealment and non-declaration from customs control at the Agarak state border crossing point were revealed by the employees of the Southern Customs Department of the State Revenue Committee. Administrative proceedings were initiated under Articles 313 and 316 of the RA Law on Customs Regulation.

Let’s emphasize that the prevention of importation of cigarettes stamped with fake excise stamps into the Republic of Armenia is also under the attention of the customs officers, including as a product for personal use. In 2023, the State Revenue Committee submitted a report on 3 cases found at the Meghri customs point to the RA Investigative Committee in order to decide whether to initiate criminal proceedings under Article 289 of the RA Criminal Code.
