During the game in Madrid, super talent Lamine Yamal was racially insulted by Real supporters. This could have critically important consequences for the perpetrators.
Four Spanish football fans are to be banned from stadiums for a year because of racist hostility towards striker Lamine Yamal and other FC Barcelona players during the “Clásico” against Real Madrid. In addition, the state committee against violence and racism in sport proposed fines of 4,000 euros each for two of the fans and 5,000 euros each for the other two, according to a statement on the Ministry of Sports’ homepage.
Spanish police took the fans into custody because there was enough evidence that they had insulted the players with racist slogans and gestures at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium at the end of October. Barcelona won the explosive duel at Real 4-0.
The two fans who insulted Yamal (17), who was still a minor, should pay the higher fine. A fifth fan will also be banned from the stadium for a year and fined 4,000 euros for insulting two barça fans after the game.
Shortly after the game, videos appeared on social media in which the contemptuous shouts of the Madrid fans could be heard. Real condemned the incidents and worked intensively to identify the perpetrators. The Spanish La liga, chaired by Javier Tebas, also denounced the racist calls.
The Spanish football institutions recently sanctioned such incidents more harshly, especially after the incidents involving real professional Vinícius Jr. at the game in Valencia in May 2023.the Brazilian was also racially insulted. Afterwards, FC Valencia was, among other things, banned from watching three games. A Spanish court also sentenced three football fans to eight months in prison each.
