The harassment affair of former Ajax professional manager Mark Obermars has shaken world and Dutch football in particular. As you may recall, about three weeks ago a former player announced that he was leaving his post after nearly a decade following harassing a number of facts at the club. Now, it has been rumored in Europe that the Dutch club may offer the role to none other than Jordi Cruyff, the son of football and Ajax legend Johan Cruyff.
Cruyff the boy, who served as the professional manager and coach of Maccabi Tel Aviv for more than six years, currently serves as a consultant to the Barcelona management, and his contract expires this summer, but it is likely that the Catalans will try to keep him. According to reports, the Dutchman took an important part in Barça’s moves in the January transfer window, which has so far proved to be particularly successful.
The Cruyff family’s connection, and especially Johan’s to Ajax, is particularly strong. The football legend grew up in the club and played for over a decade on the team, in two different terms. Later, as a coach, Cruyff coached Ajax and won the European Cup Winners’ Cup with them. In 2018 it was decided to name the stadium in Amsterdam after Cruyff – “Johan Cruyff Arena”.
Just a month ago, Ibrahim Aplai spoke on the subject: “I see Jordi Cruyff as the main candidate to replace Mark Obermars with Ajax,” said ex Barcelona and the Netherlands team, “He has a lot of experience, connections, he knows the market well and speaks many languages. He is a man “Laporte’s confidence in Barça now, but I would certainly turn to him regarding the job.”
