The Federal Minister of Education is sounding the alarm. She talks about the weak German PISA results, spoiled parents and a lack of ambition in times of full employment.

Ms. Stark-Watzinger, it is the educational news of the year: In the new Pisa test, students performed worse than ever before. Does that shock you?

Unfortunately, the poor performance was not a surprise, as the studies of the last few months were all pointing in this direction. But the scale is particularly depressing. The pressure to act has never been as great as it is now.

How could it come to this?

It would be making it too easy for yourself if you said: That was only due to the school closures during Corona or the increased immigration. The results have been declining for years and across the board. Nevertheless, we have to face the debate: What should good education policy look like in an immigration country? It starts with language skills and sometimes extends to a lack of support at home. Education and knowledge are crucial for the future of our country. Three quarters of the growth differences between economies depend on knowledge capital, i.e. smart minds.
