Agaya Tamarai, Rajakeeppakkam lake disappearing due to garbage

by time news
Thambaram: The Rajakeeppakakkam lake next to Selaiyur, Agaya Tamarai, is becoming invisible due to garbage. Social activists have demanded that the air lotus should be removed and the lake should be cleaned.
In Sembagam, next to Selaiyur, along the Thambaram – Velachery road, there is the Rajakeeppakkam lake. It is under the control of Public Works Department. The lake was sold ‘flat’ by politicians and raiders. Due to this, the 105 acre lake has been shrunk by hundreds of encroachment houses and now it is not even 10 acre.
Every year, Public Works Department takes action to remove encroachments. ‘Notices’ will be distributed to the houses. After that there will be no progress. Many years have passed in this way, and the remaining space is becoming less and less mysterious.

On the other hand, when the dam fills up during the annual monsoons, it has become a common practice to break the bank of the lake. Wastewater flows in from all four directions, thus covering the entire aerial lotus. Dumping of waste and garbage on the shores has also increased in recent times.

If things continue like this, in two or three years, there will be no trace of the existence of the Rajakeeppakkam lake. Therefore, the apathetic public works department should remove and clean the air lotus plants in the lake and prevent dumping of garbage on the shore. Similarly, social activists have demanded that steps should be taken to remove the encroachments.
