At a press conference on Secretary of Social Communication of the Presidency, Santiago Palomoannounced that the president of the republic, Bernardo Arévalo approved a day off on October 21 in Guatemala 2024 for public sector employeeswithin the framework of Revolution Day.
On Wednesday, October 16, Government Agreement 163-2024 was published, in which Monday, October 21, is made official as a paid work permit for public servants who provide services in centralized and decentralized entities of the Public Administration. This permit excludes public servants who, in compliance with their Collective Agreement on Working Conditions, enjoy this holiday on a different day, as well as personnel who provide essential public services or those who have scheduled activities that cannot be postponed. Each October 20Guatemala commemorates the Revolution of 1944a movement that marked a before and after in the country’s politics, by overthrowing the dictatorship of General Jorge Ubico and giving way to an era of democratic reforms. This is one of the holidays that Guatemalans enjoy every year, however, the October 20, 2024 It falls on Sunday and does not run on Mondaysince the Constitutional Court In 2020, it eliminated the possibility of changing the day of this holiday. For this reason and with the authorization of the holiday on October 21, only public sector employees will be able to enjoy a long weekend.
Despite this, October 20 continues to be an official day of rest with pay. Therefore, those who work during that day will receive extra remuneration equivalent to an additional 50% of their daily salary, as stipulated in the Labor Code.
The remaining holidays of 2024
Although the private sector will not be able to enjoy the long weekend in October, the holiday calendar still offers several opportunities to rest before the end of the year. Activities in commemoration of Revolution Day 2024
As part of the celebration of Revolution Day Various cultural and recreational activities will be carried out in Guatemala City and other parts of the country. These are the activities that will take place next Sunday:
- Legends Race: This race, which will begin at 7:00 am in front of the Ministry of Education and will end at Campo Marte, will cover key points in the city.
- Scenic paintings of the Revolution: The theater group itinerant TGW will present live recreations of the most emblematic moments of the 1944 Revolution. The performances will take place on different streets, from 21st Street and 6th Street. Zone 1 avenue, to the Acoustic Shell of the Historic Center.
- Exhibition of posters of the Revolution: In the Central Park of Guatemala City, there will be an exhibition of posters that pay artistic tribute to the historical events of 1944. The exhibition will be located on 6a. Street, between 6th. and 7a. avenues of Zone 1.
- Musical Harmony and Social Harmony Concert: This ensemble of musical groups will be presented in the Chiquimula Municipal Park starting at 4:00 pm, offering a space for entertainment and reflection to attendees.
