During a tribute that was held at the UNAM Law School, the minister said that the main mission of federal justice is not to settle acts between individuals, but rather between authorities against citizens.

He asserted that the “federal justice It is one of the most important elements for the stability and peace of this country, because as some of the previous participants already pointed out, it is the phrase of Don José María Morelos y Pavón that says that ‘everyone who complains justly has a court that protects him and protects him against the arbitrary and the powerful, that is federal justice.”

He stated that “it is very important to have a federal, independent and quality justice system so that we can continue defending our rights, because in the end we are all citizens, it does not matter if we will have a position or not, in the end we are all citizens and of course our families.” .

He considered that “sometimes it is said that the Supreme Court has done nothing for the country and that we are just a handful of public servants who have privileges, that is not the case, the truth is, I have lived it for 55 years, now, and that is not the case, that is not the truth.”

He highlighted that the Court endorsed “marriage celebrated by people of the same sex. A socially questionable issue, but very important because ultimately, beyond what one may personally think, it is the right to freedom of people to choose their life and move forward with it. “This has nothing to do with personal likes or dislikes, it has to do with the protection of rights.”

He pointed out that “there are examples of many things that could have been done and that the Supreme Court has done in favor of Mexico and that are applied by the lower courts and it seems, over time, that the Court is far away or that we did not even realize it. Of course we realized it, of course we resolved it and of course we support all these human rights.”

The president of the Judiciary, Norma Piña, as well as other members of the Plenary of the SCJN attended the tribute to the minister.
