Ahmedabad to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games, Ushering in New Era for Multi-Sport Event

The Indian city of Ahmedabad has been officially confirmed as the host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a significant moment for the multi-sport event and providing stability after recent challenges. The announcement, made following ratification at the Commonwealth Sport’s General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26th, positions Ahmedabad as the second Indian city to host the Games, following Delhi in 2010.

Securing the Future of the Commonwealth Games

The selection of Ahmedabad prevailed over a competing bid from Abuja, Nigeria, and represents a crucial step in solidifying the future of the Commonwealth Games. The event faced uncertainty after difficulties surrounding the 2023 Games, which ultimately saw Glasgow step in to host. This decision provides much-needed long-term certainty for the Commonwealth movement as it embarks on its second century.

Sporting Program for 2030 Games Takes Shape

Commonwealth Sport officials have confirmed that between 15 to 17 sports will feature at the 2030 Games, following a comprehensive program review. A core set of disciplines has already been established, including:

  • Athletics and Para-athletics
  • Swimming and Para-swimming
  • Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis
  • Bowls and Para Bowls
  • Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting
  • Artistic Gymnastics
  • Netball
  • Boxing

The host city, Ahmedabad, will have the opportunity to propose up to two additional sports, either traditional or new, to complete the program. Currently under consideration are popular options such as Twenty20 cricket, archery, badminton, 3×3 basketball, rugby sevens, cycling, diving, hockey, and wrestling.

A “Golden Era” for Commonwealth Sport

Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport, expressed his enthusiasm for the selection of Ahmedabad, stating, “I am delighted to report strong interest from a range of nations to host the 2034 Games and beyond. We start our next century for the Commonwealth Games in good health.” Rukare believes the 2030 Games in Ahmedabad will bring “enormous sporting passion and relevance,” signaling the “start of a new golden era for Commonwealth Sport” following a period of necessary “Games reset.”

The confirmation of Ahmedabad as the host city underscores the enduring appeal of the Commonwealth Games and sets the stage for a vibrant and successful event in 2030.
