Croatia’s air ambulance is expected to start operating in six days, Hina quoted Health Minister Vili Beros as saying in the eastern Croatian city of Osijek today.

He added that an air emergency medical service system (HEMS – Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) will cover the entire territory of the country from four air bases and will guarantee faster and quality assistance to citizens.

Fifty doctors and 50 nurses have received air ambulance training, Berosh said. He noted that the air bases will be located in Osijek and Zagreb, as well as on the islands of Krk and Brac, and will be connected to hospitals in Osijek, Zagreb, Rijeka and Dubrovnik.

Vili Berosh added that for this purpose a helipad is being built in Slavonski Brod, Eastern Croatia, and such pads will also be available in the Adriatic port cities of Pula and Zadar.

Setting up an air ambulance system costs 62.5 million euros, of which 10 million is an EU grant, he added.
