If Boeing catches a cold, even Airbus is not immune to a cold wave! The European aircraft manufacturer announced on Wednesday (October 16) plans to cut up to 2,500 jobs in its <a href="https://time.news/china-takes-another-step-towards-the-conquest-of-space-sending-the-youngest-astronaut-crew-to-the-space-station/” title=”China takes another step towards the conquest of space, sending the youngest astronaut crew to the space station”>satellite manufacturing arm as part of its defense and space business, which employs 35,000 people. The group chaired by Guillaume Faury aims to do this “rationalize [son] organization to improve competitiveness in the future ». This renovation will be carried out until mid-2026, avoiding “restrictive measures”i.e. total layoffs, in order to «limit the impact» social, promised the aircraft manufacturer.
Airbus, the world’s number one in the telecommunications satellite sector, has been affected for several years “from a very difficult and rapidly changing economic climate, with disruptions in supply chains, changes in conflict management and cost pressure due to budget constraints”pointed to Michael Schoellhorn, general manager of Airbus D&S, to justify this reduction in the workforce.
The European aircraft manufacturer is not the only one in this situation. Thales has also initiated job cuts. The group led by Patrice Caine announced, in the spring, a redistribution plan that involves the reduction of 1,300 jobs within its space subsidiary Thales Alenia Space, of which it holds 67% together with the Italian Leonardo (33% ).
This announcement did not surprise the Airbus unions. “Given the rather catastrophic financial results we achieved, we suspected something like this would happen”recognized Hervé Pinard, CFDT coordinator of the entire group. The main trade union of the aircraft manufacturer wants to prepare in advance for a possible worsening of the social climate. “It must be supported socially not only for those who leave but also for those who remain, so that they do not find themselves in a situation in which we will multiply burnouts because people will have a workload that ‘they cannot take on’preliminarily invokes the CFDT.
The end of large satellites
With its 2 billion euro turnover, the space business cannot compete with the 65.4 billion euro generated by the group, driven mainly by the commercial aviation branch. On the other hand, its losses weigh heavily. In 2023, Airbus had already had to record a charge of 600 million euros. In 2024, this provision was significantly increased to €989 million. Burdened by these new burdens, the plane maker saw its profits halve in the first half.
