President Abdelmadjid Tebboune confirmed, on Sunday, that Algeria will establish a free trade zone with Niger and then with Tunisia and Libya, in order to limit speculation in goods, pointing to the success of this free trade zone with Mauritania.
Tebboune confirmed in the weekly meeting he organizes with local media, that “Algeria is not currently thinking about joining blocs because the country’s priority is to build a strong economy with immunity that keeps it away from international fluctuations, and it is working hard to achieve self-sufficiency and produce wheat, barley and other necessary foodstuffs.”
Tebboune revealed his country’s intention to buy “shares in the BRICS Development Bank” worth one and a half billion US dollars.
This comes after previous statements, in which Tebboune expressed Algeria’s desire to join BRICS, which aims to get rid of the dollar’s dominance in international commercial transactions.
During the meeting, Tebboune revealed the reasons for Algeria’s retreat from joining the economic bloc, saying: “Because of the positions of some member states, we wanted to enter this bloc, but some members obstructed Algeria’s accession, and were certain that they would not influence it or its brotherhood, and those who opposed entry They benefited Algeria, and our friends remain friends.”
