Girona‘s large companies increase their revenues. According to the study ‘Girona 100 SA‘, created jointly by the consultancy firm KPMG and the University of Girona (UdG), the 68% of the companies interviewed increased the billing19% maintained it and only 13% decreased it.
Incomes improved especially in family businesses, 75% increased turnover and only 8% reported a decrease. On the contrary, non-family businesses show a more varied situation, where 43% increased their turnover, 29% maintained it and 29% suffered a decrease.
The study, now in its fourteenth edition, examines some of the most important companies in the demarcation. According to the results the 77% of companies increased their workforce during 2023, while 13% maintained it and 10% decreased it. If we look at activity abroad, 50% of companies increased their international activity, 37% maintained it and only 3% recorded a decrease.
Attract and retain talent
The study also analyzes the main ones worries of companies. This year, the difficulty in attracting and retaining talent is at the top of the list, according to 48% of companies. Rising commodity prices, which topped the list in 2023, now rank second among concerns (29%).
On the other hand, among the main requests there is that reduction of bureaucracy and that there is greater tax simplification (55%), followed by the promotion of simpler and more flexible employment contracts (48%) and greater investment incentives (39%).
Companies also talk about the adjustments planned for this year and the majority, 58%, do not plan to make any. Only one 6% of companies had to lay off workers or plan to do so, a figure that is down significantly from last year, when one in five companies, or 20%, said they planned to reduce their workforce.
Turnover grows by 20%
The other major pillar of the ‘Girona 100 SA’, the quantitative part of the study, collects data from the main companies of the demarcation during 2022. In this case, the report highlights that turnover increased for the second consecutive year, after the loss caused by the covid-19 pandemic.
Overall, the report highlights that global turnover grew by up to 20%, standing at 15,178 million euros (compared to 12,632 million in 2021). The meat industry continues to lead the ranking, because according to ACS the cluster had a turnover of 4,052 million (11% more than the previous year). This is followed by the other manufacturing industries, which in 2022 reached a turnover of 2,704 million (which, in this case, represents a 13% increase in turnover).
