The 50-year-old man returned to South Korea from Thailand on December 10. He suffered health problems and was admitted to the hospital. It was during the tests conducted on him that he was diagnosed with a brain-eating amoeba infection. He was undergoing continuous treatment and died last Wednesday without treatment. This is the first time this brain-eating amoeba infection has been detected in South Korea. It is noteworthy that this disease was first diagnosed in the United States in 1937.

Naegleria fowleri is an amoeba commonly found in freshwater lakes, rivers, canals and ponds. When humans swim in pools or seas, this amoeba enters through the nose and directly attacks and destroys brain tissue. It is said that there is a possibility of more casualties due to this. According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, human-to-human transmission of Naegleria fowleri is low. It has also requested that the affected areas should refrain from using the lakes and ponds in that area.
