The Cabildo of Gran Canaria has released a buzzard (Buteo buteo) in the Viera y Clavijo Botanical Garden, a specimen that was rescued in September 2021 in the municipality of Santa María de Guía with a fracture in the right humerus.

He arrived at the Tafira Wildlife Recovery Center (Gran Canaria) with a serious fracture in a wing, but after several years of recovery from what in the wild was certain death, he has now flown freely again.

The veterinary team had to perform surgery on her, in an operation that managed to fix the broken bones, and which began a recovery process that has been long and delicate. Once the fractured bones were healed, the eagle has been recovering its mobility in a flight cage, repositioning and distributing the lines of force of the broken bone, until it is completely recovered.

The buzzard is one of the queens of the skies of the Canary Islands, with a subspecies specific to the islands. Despite the threats it suffers, and after being in serious danger of disappearing, this variety currently has a booming population. Although they are considered medium in size, they can measure up to a meter and a half in wingspan.

This released bird will possibly be late this year for its breeding period, but it still has a long life ahead of it, since on average they tend to live between 25 and 30 years.

The Cabildo normally receives several injured specimens each year of this species classified as protected.

The Tafira Wildlife Recovery Center is a facility at the national forefront, which has been working since 1981 in the study and conservation of nature. This center cares for almost 2,000 wild animals a year, of which 40% are birds of prey, as well as other seabirds and marine mammals such as turtles. 60% of the animals that arrive at this facility are due to trauma as a result of human action, such as being run over, damaged by electrical wiring, hunting pellets or hitting glass windows.
