About a third of children after COVID-19 may develop complications, in particular, damage to the heart, kidneys, endocrine glands, said Alexander Gorelov, deputy director for scientific work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

“Although more often the disease in children is easier, nevertheless, in 30% of cases, they may develop post-ovarian complications, in which the heart, kidneys, endocrine glands, brain, and gastrointestinal tract are affected,” RIA Novosti quotes the scientist. According to him, the risk of developing this complication is especially high in overweight children.

He clarified that the maximum proportion of cases is made up of children aged 14-17, because they are more mobile and socially active. At the same time, young children are less likely to get sick due to the fact that they are now more disunited during the summer holidays.

On July 5, clinical trials of the domestic drug “Sputnik V” on adolescents 12-17 years old started in Moscow. The study will involve 100 volunteers. According to the director of the Gamaleya Scientific Center, Alexander Gintsburg, vaccination of adolescents against coronavirus should begin before September 20.
