TRENTO. The end of a love is painful, heartbreaking, humiliating, it forces unanswered questions and painful reflections. «Pass me an anesthetic – Look for a name for this metachronic pain – I would just like a little attention…» sings Anna Carol from Bolzano. A few days ago Inri Records/Metatron released his new single, “Diversi tipi di Dolore”, the second song from his new project after the previous “The Contract”, released in mid-November and which anticipates the album. A hypnotic ballad that tells of the suffering of unrequited love, an intimate song that gives voice to that invisible but universal pain that we have all felt at least once. The cover of the single, created by the artist Robert Bosisio, portrays a navel: a powerful symbol that recalls the viscerality of the song and its deep connection with the most authentic emotions. Behind the project there is also a team of exceptional collaborators: the track was produced by Federico Dragogna, who also played the guitars together with Ramiro Levy; the baritone sax is by Beppe Scardino while the drums were entrusted to Daniel Plentz and the bass to Eduardo Stein Dechtiar.
Anna Bernard, this is the singer’s real name, is from Bolzano and a citizen of the world. She lived and studied between Cologne, Rotterdam and London, where she came into contact with the soul, R&B, international songwriting and visual and performing arts music scenes of the contemporary European scene. Anna Carol’s debut album, “Cinetica”, released in November 2022, is a tangle of emotions intertwined in acoustic and electronic sounds that flow into cosmopolitan-influenced pop melodies. Among his many concerts we remember the opening of those of Vasco Brondi, Dente and Cristina Donà. In the last two years she has dedicated herself to the production of her second album with the artistic production of Federico Dragogna and played in the studio by Selton. On November 15th he released “Ilcontro”, the first single which marks the beginning of the new collaboration with Inri/Metatron. We talk to her starting from the chosen title.
How many types of pain are there?
«There are many pains, but what I talk about in this song is the pain of abandonment, of unrequited love, of impossible love. It is a sharp, invisible, solitary pain and above all without the possibility of cure.”
To get to this album he took different paths. What were the most important?
«Definitely all the music I listened to and sang abroad. Pop, rock, then blues, folk, R&B, and above all jazz, my first great love. I explored everything. My previous project, Carol Might Know, was important. In fact, I added Carol to my real name, Anna. Now I have arrived at songwriting in Italian, because it is my language, I express myself better, since I compose my own pieces. My tongue gives me the opportunity to remove the veil, lay myself bare, even slap myself.”
What are your first sources of inspiration? Is this song a bit autobiographical?
«Everything inspires me, my life, that of my friends. Yes, there is a lot of me in this song, but I think it’s happened to everyone to lose a love, to fall in love and not be reciprocated, since kindergarten.”
Now he divides his time between Milan and Bolzano. What does one city give you and what does the other?
«I love Milan, everything happens here, if you want to do something you have to be here. I spend half the year there, usually autumn and winter. In spring and summer I stay in Bolzano. I find my inspiration in nature which is beautiful there. But Bolzano lacks the lively music and artistic scene that there is in Milan.”
The video for this song is directed by his brother, director Andrea Bernard…
«It’s the first time he and I have done something together. It was a lot of fun working with him, he made a long take that was very ironic and subtle.”
What role does music have in your life?
«Music is now part of me. Writing my songs allows me to lay myself bare, bring out my fragility, be direct, without veils, it gives me the courage to dare. Music for me is a necessity to heal wounds…”
