Antezana 247: the legend of the birthplace of Argentine trap

2018 was the year in which trap as a genre definitely settled in the country. It was not by chance: the final farewell to El Quinto Escalón (a freestyle competition that took place in Parque Rivadavia and from which several of today’s famous voices arose) was the initial spark. There were more listeners and also a greater recognition of the artists. Among all the groups and singers of this time we can mention Modo Diablo, the first to fill a Luna Park and play internationally.

And what was Devil Mode? Let’s say that a kind of monster with three heads (or rather: three hearts, three brains and three voices) made up of Duki (Mauro Ezequiel Lombardo), Neo Pistea (Sebastian Chinellato) and Ysy A (Alejo Nahuel Acosta, founder of the Fifth Echelon). Three artists whose friendship was forged to a large extent behind the scenes of Antezana’s house 247. Also a lot of music was devised or even directly recorded in that place. That address is not just an address. It is also the first studio album by Ysy A.

This album was a before and after within the genre. The intro of it, called Welcome, is an audio where Alejo (Ysy A) says that they have just moved to a house, a mansion, in Caballito. Antezana 247 would then be the home of Modo Diablo for eight months, and many stories, anecdotes and songs arose within it. And, if the Beatles had an Abbey Road, the studio where the Argentine trap started had this space.

For this very reason, when In March of this year, the youtuber Boffe posted on Twitter a screenshot of a house for sale in Mercado Libre and the fans realized that it was Antezana 247, the Trap Mansion, the networks became red hot. For many, it was almost like seeing Charly García’s house (the mythical corner of Santa Fe and Bulnes) in danger of extinction.

I do not regret this love (al trap)

There are plenty of reasons to be so famous at the Caballito house. There is too much history and music on its walls, because in addition to being a creative hub, it was the site of many parties that Modo Diablo itself organized to raise money. These celebrations were usually by invitation and lasted many hours, with tremendous noises that made the neighbors angry. This was such a recurring issue that even in one of the songs on the Ysy A album, the neighbors and the police were alluded to, who watched and couldn’t believe the things that were happening inside the house.

Another moment that immortalized Antezana 247? Duki’s song called Rockstar, which not only refers to the house but the accompanying video was shot entirely in it. For many people, those were the first and even the only images they have seen of the place where the national trap was born. Just one piece of information: as of today, the song has 98 million views and last June, the second version of the song was released, without taking it inside the house and with the collaboration of the Puerto Rican artist Jhay Cortez.

Definitely, the house has a mystique and a history that many fans of these artists fear losing. The version even circulated that the house would be demolished, which ultimately did not happen. But since fear remains, at the beginning of the year an IG account called @antezana247_patrimonio cultural was created to make visible a demand that does not stop growing: declare Antezana 247 heritage, with the aim of preserving it and making it a cultural space. The account has more than 7,200 followers and every day more people are interested in supporting and contributing their grain of sand to the cause.

Generally every fortnight there are gatherings in the Benito Nazar square, next to the housewhere there is live music, freestyle battles and similar activities united behind the same objective.

Trapped in doubts

The Buenos Aires Legislature, for its part, has not said anything about the status of the petition. However, many are the properties that -scattered throughout the city- have been recognized and protected for having been the home of musicians, actresses, writers or show people. For example, the house located at Jean Jaures at 733, where Carlos Gardel lived and today it works as a museum that remembers and honors him. Without being a museum but a place of rock pilgrimage, Charly Garcia’s house in Coronel Diaz in 1903 is full of graffiti and tributes, just like the house where Luca Prodan lived and died. None of these has been recognized as sites of interest by the City and it is precisely for this reason that the debate on what will happen to Antezana is still open. Even for their owners.

Indeed, Alejandro and his family – current owners of the trap’s mansion and who lived in the house all their lives, until they decided to rent it to Modo Diablo – still don’t know what will happen. The man has already given several interviews telling what it is like to live in a place so charged with energy. He acknowledged that he supports the movement that has been created and believes that the property – which is really huge – could easily be a radio station or a cultural center.

Meanwhile, the house is still closed and waiting. Many say that it was due to the excesses of substances and the constant fights with the neighbors and others believe that their music had already generated enough money to leave and live each one by their side. Whatever the real explanation, the truth is that Duki, Ysy A and Neo Pistea no longer live in Antezana 247. But something of them stayed there forever. On its walls, in its atmosphere. Something of the freedom of the beginnings, when everything was to be done. When there was a lack of money and plenty of talent, the three waited for an opportunity. The fans know it and everything they’re doing has to do with it. With resurrecting a dream of which they also feel protagonists.
