Users of iMacs with Apple chips are massively complaining about the deterioration of their screens two years after purchase. As Day.Az reports, the first complaints appeared back in October 2023 on the Apple Community forum, where 17 pages of comments have already been collected, the Tom’s Hardware portal reports.

It is noted that the main problem is the appearance of dark horizontal lines on the screens of iMacs with the M1 processor released in May 2021. Apple service centers offer users a full screen replacement, which can cost between $600 and $700 – the amount for which you can purchase a new basic M2 Mac Mini.

One owner conducted his own investigation and determined that the problem was due to a flexible cable that could not withstand the required voltage, causing overheating and short circuits. Therefore, after replacing the screens, the problem may recur if the root cause of the problem is not corrected.

Possible causes include a design flaw, a manufacturing defect, or low-quality components. In addition, a similar problem was noticed in more current iMacs with an M3 processor purchased in May 2024.

Apple has not yet officially acknowledged the defect and has not made proposals to eliminate it.
