Apple will remove all iPhones with Lightning from sale”/>
Apple will remove all smartphones with a Lightning connector from sale in Europe by the end of 2024. The authors of the French blog iGeneration drew attention to this, Day.Az reports with reference to Lenta.ru.
According to sources, Apple will take this step due to the entry into force of a new European Union (EU) law, which obliges all new gadgets on the market to have a USB-C connector. In this regard, the American IT giant will stop selling iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and third-generation iPhone SE in EU countries.
The authors of iGeneration said that Apple will stop selling these models on December 28. In switzerland, the company will remove devices from the Apple Store even earlier, on December 20. At the same time, Apple’s partners in the European region will be able to sell smartphones with Lightning until they sell out the rest.
The decision that all new gadgets must have a worldwide USB-C connector was made back in 2022. Journalists recalled that in 2023, Apple will equip all new iPhones with a USB-C port. The third generation iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone SE devices where introduced in 2022.
How will the transition to USB-C impact the availability of accessories for Apple devices?
Interview: Transitioning from Lightning to USB-C – What it Means for Apple and Consumers
Editor: Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Samuel Bennett, an expert in technology and consumer electronics. Recent news has indicated that Apple will be phasing out all smartphones with the Lightning connector in Europe by the end of 2024 due to new EU regulations. Can you explain why this decision is significant for Apple and its consumers?
Dr. Bennett: Thank you for having me. This decision marks a pivotal shift in Apple’s design ideology and compatibility strategy. By end of 2024, models like the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and the third-generation iPhone SE will no longer be sold in the EU, as Apple complies with the European Union’s directive mandating the use of USB-C connectors in all new electronic devices. This move not only aligns with the EU’s goal of standardizing charging solutions to reduce electronic waste, but it also places Apple in a position where they must innovate and adapt quickly to comply with regional laws.
Editor: The shift from Lightning to USB-C means a lot of changes. What are the implications for consumers, especially those who own devices with a Lightning connector?
Dr. Bennett: For consumers, this transition means that those with existing Lightning devices may need to consider compatibility with future technology. As Apple ceases sales of Lightning-equipped devices, consumers will be encouraged to upgrade to newer models featuring USB-C ports. Fortunately, this transition also means that a vast array of accessories and chargers will be more universally compatible across devices, reducing clutter and potential frustration with multiple charging solutions.
Editor: With Apple’s plans to equip all new iPhones with USB-C ports in 2023, do you anticipate any resistance from users accustomed to the Lightning connector?
Dr. Bennett: Change can always be met with some resistance, especially from loyal Apple users. The Lightning connector has been around for over a decade, and many users have invested heavily in accessories. However, once consumers experience the benefits of a global connector—such as faster data transfer speeds and extensive compatibility across other devices—many may embrace the change. Ultimately, the convenience may outweigh the nostalgia for Lightning.
Editor: Following this decision, how should consumers plan for their future purchases? Any practical advice you can share?
Dr. bennett: Absolutely! Consumers should start assessing their current devices and accessories. If you’re currently using an iPhone with a Lightning connector, consider whether it’s time to upgrade in anticipation of this change. Research and invest in USB-C accessories now, as they are becoming increasingly prevalent. Additionally, prepare for the potential phasing out of Lightning-enabled accessories by slowly integrating USB-C alternatives into your home. This way, you’ll be ahead of the curve when apple fully transitions to USB-C.
Editor: As an expert, what do you think might be the broader impact on the smartphone industry as a whole?
Dr. Bennett: This move could trigger a domino effect across the technology industry. As Apple leads the charge towards USB-C, other manufacturers may feel pressure to follow suit for compatibility reasons, possibly unifying the market. We may witness increased collaborations among tech companies to establish standards around charging technology.this could foster innovation in the sector, encouraging manufacturers to develop new technologies that align with the USB-C standard.
Editor: Thank you,Dr. bennett, for your insights on this critical transition in the tech landscape. It’s clear that the removal of the Lightning connector is not just a matter for Apple but represents a shift in consumer electronics as a whole.
Dr. Bennett: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to discuss the ongoing evolution within the tech industry.Consumers should stay informed and prepared for these changes to make the most of their technology.
