Australian Man Jailed Nine Days for Grabbing Ariana Grande in Singapore

A Singapore court sentenced an Australian man to nine days in jail on Monday after he approached and touched pop star Ariana Grande at the Asian premiere of Wicked: For Good last week. The incident, captured in viral videos, underscores growing concerns about fan behavior and security at high-profile events.

The incident occurred as Grande and fellow cast members were attending the opening night at Universal Studios Singapore. According to court documents, 26-year-old Johnson Wen bypassed security, jumped a barricade, and put his arm around the actor.

Video clips circulating online show Wen wrapping his arm around a visibly shocked Grande, then jumping and waving to the crowd. Grande’s co-star, Cynthia Erivo, immediately intervened, rushing to her defense before security personnel removed Wen from the area.

Wen was arrested hours later and charged with “being a public nuisance.” The judge presiding over the case stated, “This act was premeditated,” before delivering the nine-day sentence. Appearing via video link, Wen initially expressed confusion regarding the charges but ultimately entered a guilty plea.

The judge further noted that Wen “showed a pattern of behaviour, which suggests that you will do it again,” alleging his actions were motivated by attention-seeking and a disregard for the safety of others. He emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, “You should be mindful that there are always consequences for one’s actions.”

When asked for mitigation, Wen told the court, “I won’t do it again, Your Honour. I am going to stop getting into trouble.” However, the judge stressed the need to “send a signal to like-minded individuals… that we will not condone any act that potentially undermines the reputation of Singapore as a safe country.”

Wen has already served four days of his sentence and has five days remaining. Authorities have not yet clarified if further action will be taken upon his release.

The premiere continued as scheduled following the incident, with the cast gathering around Grande before proceeding along the yellow carpet. The incident comes nearly seven years after the devastating Manchester Arena bombing in 2017, which occurred at one of Grande’s concerts, killing 22 people and leaving the singer with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Grande, 32, began her career on Broadway before achieving global pop stardom. This latest incident highlights the challenges of balancing fan enthusiasm with the need to ensure the safety and security of public figures.
