They should look like humans and have hands with five fingers. In addition to autonomous cars, Tesla is also planning to build robots in the future. Elon Musk wants to present the prototype as early as next year.

Dhe US electrical manufacturer Tesla also wants to build robots in the future that can do dangerous or boring work. Tesla boss Elon Musk announced on Thursday a human-like prototype, the so-called “Tesla Bot”: He will have “hands with five fingers”. Musk wants to present the prototype as early as next year.

Musk made the announcement at Tesla’s “AI Day” – the “Artificial Intelligence Day” (AI). “It should of course be friendly, be able to navigate through a world built for people and eliminate dangerous, repetitive and boring work.” It will also be constructed in such a way that it is not particularly fast. “You will be able to run away from him.”

According to Musk, the Tesla bot will be around 177 centimeters tall and weigh 57 kilograms. “It has some kind of screen on the head for useful information, but otherwise it is basically equipped with an autopilot system,” said the entrepreneur. The Tesla robot will be equipped with eight cameras and a fully-fledged self-driving computer and use the same tools that Tesla uses in the car.

Humans should be able to give commands to the robot

“The most difficult thing about a useful humanoid robot is that it cannot navigate the world without being specifically trained.” But that has to work without explicit instructions. “You can talk to him and say, ‘Please take this screw and attach it to the car with the wrench’ and he should be able to do that”.

The use of humanoid robots will have far-reaching consequences, Musk predicted. “In the future, physical work will be an option. If you want to do it, you can do it, but you don’t have to do it. ”Obviously, this has profound economic effects. Because if you consider that the economy at its most basic level consists of work, then maybe there are no longer any real limits to the economy.

Tesla is known for announcing major technical innovations at a very early stage of development and for bringing systems live that are not yet considered market-ready by other companies. This also applies to the self-drive option in Tesla’s “Autopilot” driver assistance system, which has come under fire after a series of rear-end collisions. Tesla calls the next stage of the program “full self-driving” – that is, completely self-driving – although according to the criteria common in the industry it remains just an assistance system.

There is new criticism from several environmental associations for the construction plans of the Tesla factory in Grünheide near Berlin. The assessment of the planned battery factory in the new application documents for approval is difficult, “because everything is blacked out,” said the state manager of the Green League, Michael Ganschow, on Friday. “The quantities given cannot be traced, the substances cannot be traced.” The battery factory is being built on the border of a water protection area, so that certain hazardous substances are not prohibited.

Tesla wants to start production there by the end of the year, the start was originally planned for July. The final environmental approval from the state of Brandenburg is still pending, which is why the company is relying on individual early approvals. The managing director of Nabu Brandenburg, Christiane Schröder, rejects further early approvals for the settlement. “Because here you run the risk of building things into the landscape and creating incidents that can then no longer be captured,” said Schröder.

The deadline for objecting to Tesla’s updated application expired at midnight on Friday night. Both environmental associations failed in July with an urgent application against further early approval for the construction.
