The former OM coach succeeds Diego Alonso, who was not reappointed after the elimination in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.
It was expected, it’s official. Free since leaving Leeds in February 2022, Marcelo Bielsa had agreed for several weeks with the Uruguayan federation. We were only waiting for the announcement of the signing of his contract. It’s done. “El Loco” inherits the title of technical director of the Celeste. He succeeds Diego Alonso, not renewed at the end of his contract after the elimination in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup. Under contract for three years, the 67-year-old Argentinian technician will aim to guide the double champions of the World (1930, 1950) until the 2026 World Cup in Canada, the United States and Mexico.
This is not the first time that Marcelo Bielsa will lead a South American selection: he has already led Argentina (1998-2004) – where he won the Olympics in 2004 – and Chile (2007 -11), he who notably passed on the benches of Newell’s, Bilbao, Marseille and Lille. He then brought a smile back to Leeds fans (2018-22), notably allowing the club to return to the Premier League.
