An underwater center that saves industrial amounts of energy thanks to its natural cooling.
China is opening new technological horizons. Energy efficiency is one of the points to be achieved by humanity, and part of this objective is in the new data center built in China: will be the first in the world to be built underwaterwill have the power equivalent to 6 million PCs, and the natural cooling of the sea will drastically reduce energy consumption which would require standard refrigeration.
The first underwater data center
This is the most ambitious project that could be mark the future of sustainability in many aspectsthanks to its location under the sea. Today, two thirds of the Earth is submerged by water, while the price of plots of land is increasing due to the constant demand for space for all types of activities. Chinese television has echoed this news and has given extensive coverage to this data center that could be a complete technological revolution.
This data center, built under the sea, will have a plot of 68,000 square metersor what is the same, about 7 hectaresand in this space up to 100 storage units of 1,100 tons each can be placed. Each unit has the processing capacity of 60,000 computers, so, with one hundred of these devices, this center will be capable of processing the work equivalent of 6 million computers.
Furthermore, another of the brightest aspects of this data center is the fact that natural water cooling allows this center stop consuming up to 122 million kilowatts per hoursince that is usually one of the aspects that consumes the most energy within the world servers. Each data unit has up to 25 years useful lifeso this new center also has broad viability over time.
China’s technological strength
It has changed a lot China’s public image in recent decades. If before, as an emerging economy, it was always considered a cheap manufacturing industry, today, as a world power, it is one of the countries that leads the way in various technological segments. In fact, it is expected that very soon China will lead the race for the development of Artificial Intelligence, and as a result, companies are already planning their future taking into account that AI will allow them to do without more employees.
Now, China becomes the first country in the world to take advantage of underwater spaces to create ultra-efficient data centers with less environmental impact than a data center of the same qualities on land. In fact, if time confirms the success of this project, we could be facing the first of many more data centers that take advantage of the natural environment of the sea to obtain the most satisfactory results with the least amount of energy possible.
