Philippines Launches 2026 ASEAN Chairship, Prioritizing Sustainable Tourism

The Philippines officially began its preparations on November 14 for its 2026 chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), outlining a vision to establish the region as a leading global destination for sustainable tourism.

The country’s ambition, unveiled ahead of hosting the 2026 ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) in Cebu from January 26-29, centers on fostering regional cooperation and presenting ASEAN as a unified tourism brand. This initiative comes as the Philippines formally accepted the ASEAN chairship during a turnover ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in October.

A Unified Vision for ASEAN Tourism

According to a senior official, the Philippines aims to drive ASEAN’s position as a champion of responsible travel. This will be a key focus during the country’s term, which encompasses not only the high-profile leaders’ summits but all gatherings for the bloc. The Philippines is coordinating the development of the ASEAN Tourism Strategic Action Plan, a major outcome document expected from the upcoming ATF and ministerial meetings.

“That began with a survey of the priority tourism products and priorities of the ASEAN economies as far as tourism development is concerned,” the official explained. “And on the part of the Philippines, we’re really pushing for regional cooperation for ASEAN as one tourism destination for sustainability in tourism development.”

Preparations Underway for 2026 ATF

Preparations for the 2026 ASEAN chairship are “well underway,” with the Department of Tourism (DOT) leading efforts in hospitality, cultural events, and curated tours for visiting delegates. The DOT is also focused on maximizing participation in the TRAVEX trade show, a crucial component of the ATF.

“It should be as big as we can make it, limited only by the capacity of the Mactan Expo,” a DOT representative stated. The goal is to attract a substantial number of international buyers to the event, bolstering regional tourism opportunities.

The ASEAN chair plays a pivotal role in setting the agenda and guiding the direction of the organization, and the Philippines is poised to leverage this position to advance its vision for a more sustainable and interconnected tourism landscape within the region. This commitment reflects a growing global emphasis on responsible travel and the potential for ASEAN to emerge as a leader in this evolving sector.
