Astronomers: the Sun is experiencing the largest surge in activity since 2017

by time news

The Laboratory of Solar Astronomy and Heliophysical Instrumentation of the IKI RAS and ISTP SB RAS reported that in less than a week 3 X-class flares occurred on the Sun. :50, the third – January 11 at about 2:00. The surge in solar activity was the largest since 2017, experts say.

According to astrophysicists, the power of explosions on the Sun is estimated on a 5-point scale, and the explosions of each next category are 10 times more powerful than the previous one. Thus, class X flares are 10,000 times more powerful than class A flares. Also, the energy of each such explosion is thousands of times greater than the total energy produced by mankind throughout history.

None of the three flares that have already occurred will cause magnetic storms on Earth, since they did not occur on the line connecting the Sun and Earth, experts say. It is noted that the main center of solar explosions continues to move towards this line and will reach it on Saturday-Sunday.
