The autonomous communities that have borne greater fiscal pressure in recent years are the Balearic Islands, Cantabria and Asturias. This is stated in the report “How many taxes do Spaniards pay according to their community of residence”, which has been prepared for the Disenso Foundation by José Félix Sanz, professor of Applied Economics at the Complutense University of Madrid, and Santiago Álvarez, Professor of Finance Public of the University of Oviedo.

The study by Sanz and Álvarez makes a regionalized calculation of the main indicators of aggregate fiscal burden: fiscal pressure, fiscal sacrifice and fiscal pressure adjusted to sacrifice. In this sense, the results demonstrate important differences (more than 10 points in some cases) in the tax pressure borne by Spanish taxpayers depending on their community of residence.

The autonomous communities that have borne greater fiscal pressure in recent years are the Balearic Islands, Cantabria and Asturias. Those that bear the least fiscal pressure are La Rioja, Navarra and the Canary Islands, according to the study.

The report was presented in Barcelona by Ricardo Ruiz de la Serna, head of Studies and Training at the Disenso Foundation, linked to the Vox political group. Ruiz de la Serna pointed out that “it is compatible to maintain a reasonable level of fiscal pressure with low tax rates in accordance with the conclusions of the report.” Furthermore, he pointed out that “it opens the door to other types of debates, such as the destination of funds, the interpretation of tax regulations and the rule of law, in a context where taxes are being used for political purposes.”
