Thanks to a free throw two seconds from time, Asvel won 77-76 in Valence.

Asvel won Friday with a breath on the ground of Valencia (77-76) after a suspenseful end of the match to clinch its first victory of the season in the Euroleague after its defeat in the opening.

The Villeurbannais, beaten last week at home by Milan (69-62), won on a free throw by Jonah Matthews 2.5 seconds from time, obtained after an offensive foul whistled against Valencia player Jared Harper when he had the winning ball (76-76).

Before this last twist, Asvel, who had a four-point lead with less than two minutes remaining (76-72), thought they had missed the boat when Nando De Colo missed his shot 16 seconds from time.

The leader or rear of the Blues, returned to France in the off-season after 13 years abroad, notably crowned with two Euroleague titles (with CSKA Moscow), was the man of the end of the match, registering eight of the his team’s last nine points. But it was Matthews who finally scored the final, decisive one.

Villeurbanne will travel next Tuesday to Fenerbahce’s pitch for the 3rd day.
