After 6:00 p.m. on Friday, the news was confirmed: the four minors had been found alive in the middle of the jungle. What began to grow as a rumor was soon confirmed by President Gustavo Petro, who came from Havana, Cuba, to sign the ceasefire with the ELN guerrillas.

“Today we have had a magical day, undoubtedly full of joy: getting closer and touching peace in the agreement that is advancing with the ELN. And now, I come back, and the first news is that indeed the indigenous communities that were in search and the Military Forces jointly found the children 40 days later”, he pointed out.

The president confirmed that the minors were not in the hands of any indigenous community, as had been speculated at some point, but, on the contrary, they managed to survive for 40 days in the jungle by their own means.

On Friday night, the head of state pointed out that this fact “will remain in history”, after these minors achieved an example of total survival. “So these children are today the children of peace and the children of Colombia,” he stressed.

Petro explained that at this moment they are receiving medical attention and, later, they will be transferred to San José del Guaviare, so that the first review can be carried out. “If the doctors advise, they will either be brought to Bogotá or Villavicencio, but it depends on what the doctors decide,” he said.

“The message is that they are weak, let’s let the doctors make their assessment and we’ll know,” the Colombian president told the media. Likewise, he stressed that it is “a gift for life that our children have been cared for by our jungle.”

Children are known to be very thin, with signs of dehydration and insect bites.

President Petro confirmed that Wilson, the dog that would have been with them at one time, has not turned up. “Their learning to live in the jungle is what has saved them,” he concluded.
