In a letter to Greek Catholic Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Pope Francis expressed his solidarity with the suffering Ukraine.
On December 29, Pope Francis expressed his disapproval of Russia’s missile attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, calling them “despicable” and “unacceptable”. Expressing his solidarity with the suffering Ukraine, the Pope expressed his sorrow for those who died in the accident and prayed for the injured.
In the letter, the Pope expressed concern about the growing international crisis and warned against Ukraine becoming a ‘forgotten’ war. The Pope stressed the duty to prevent the conflict from being shrouded in silence. He also asked the international community to seek peaceful solutions.

On January 3, Pope Francis reiterated his position on the war in a public meeting. He stated that “war is madness and always war is a failure” and called for prayers for the people of the conflict zones of Palestine, Israel and Ukraine. The Pope concluded his letter by assuring Greek Catholic Major Archbishop Shevchuk of his commitment to make fervent appeals for an end to hostilities in Ukraine and the pursuit of a just peace.
