Azerbaijan remains committed to translating the goals of the Rio Trio Initiative into concrete results.
As Day.Az reports on wednesday, this was stated by the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan Mukhtar Babayev, speaking at the opening of a session on the topic “From Riyadh to Belem: the rio Trio initiative for public-private interaction” within the framework of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16).
“Today, as we face the challenges of our time, we see how closely linked our efforts are within the framework of the Rio Conventions. Climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation and desertification are not separate problems. They are deeply interconnected and require integrated and coordinated solutions. We we are responsible for coordinating our strategies and creating synergies.
Integrated platforms like the Rio Trio initiative reflect our commitment to bridging gaps and finding solutions that will increase the impact of our individual efforts. Azerbaijan recognizes the power of nature-based solutions to combat the interrelated challenges of climate change, water scarcity and biodiversity loss. We have created the first marine protected area in the Caspian Sea to protect critical ecosystems,” he said.
M. Babayev noted that Azerbaijan’s chairmanship at COP29 is aimed at ensuring that integration becomes a central element of the action agenda.
“We are working to build connections across diffrent forums and sectors, recognizing that climate action is a cross-sectoral challenge. A leading example of our approach is the COP29 water initiative. Water is key to addressing land degradation and desertification. As climate change intensifies, combating water scarcity becomes a necessity. The decline in Caspian Sea levels highlights the urgency of sustainable water management. One of the key achievements of the COP29 Presidency was the adoption of the Baku Declaration on Water. resources for climate action, supported by nearly 50 countries and non-state actors, the Declaration commits signatories to using integrated approaches to combat the impacts of climate change in water basins and integrating water measures into national climate strategies,” the minister added.
Babaev emphasized that water is the link between the climate and biological crises and the problems of desertification.
“These initiatives reflect the collaborative spirit of the Rio Trio and are closely aligned with the goals of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification. The Rio Trio Initiative also highlights the need to create harmonized platforms for sharing data and knowledge by integrating indicators from indices, maps and national biodiversity strategies , we can simplify efforts, increase accountability and base our policies on practical results. Indigenous and local knowledge must play a central role in shaping these systems. their wisdom offers invaluable guidance for sustainable practice.
Our shared challenges are significant, but they also present opportunities for innovation and collaboration. By strengthening synergies between conventions, we must promote sustainable land use practices, improve water efficiency through nature-based solutions, scale up land restoration efforts to combat land degradation, and promote regional and international cooperation for resilient ecosystems. In this spirit, Azerbaijan remains committed to translating the vision of the rio Trio Initiative into concrete results that will benefit both people and the planet,” he concluded.
It should be noted that the Rio Trio Initiative is an innovative partnership between the governments of the republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Colombia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
This cooperation aims to advance global efforts for sustainable development by coordinating the presidencies of Azerbaijan of the UN Climate Change Convention,Colombia of the Convention on Biological Diversity and Saudi Arabia of the Convention to Combat Desertification.
The three countries are united in their commitment to use their Presidencies to stimulate urgent and coordinated action and call on the international community to join this initiative as a long-term platform for cooperation – both at the upcoming Conferences of the Parties and beyond.
How does Mukhtar Babayev envision public-private partnerships contributing to environmental sustainability in Azerbaijan?
Interview between Time.news editor and Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan
Editor: Welcome, Mr. babayev! It’s a pleasure to have you wiht us today. Your recent statements at the UNCCD COP16 conference highlighted Azerbaijan’s commitment to the Rio Trio Initiative. Can you share with our readers what this initiative is all about and why it’s notable for Azerbaijan?
Babayev: Thank you for having me. The Rio Trio Initiative encompasses the goals of three pivotal conventions—the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. This initiative is crucial because it recognizes the intertwining nature of climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation. For Azerbaijan,it underscores our commitment to finding cohesive solutions to these urgent global challenges.
Editor: That sounds vital, especially given the current environmental crises we face. You emphasized the importance of integrated and coordinated solutions. Can you elaborate on what this entails for Azerbaijan and how it affects public-private partnerships?
Babayev: Absolutely. Integrated approaches mean that we cannot work in silos; all these issues are interconnected. For Azerbaijan, this translates into collaborating effectively not just across government departments but also with private sector stakeholders. Investments in sustainable practices, technology transfer, and educational initiatives are key components. By working together, we can amplify our impact and create sustainable models that benefit both the environment and the economy.
Editor: It sounds like a comprehensive strategy. What are some specific initiatives or projects that Azerbaijan is currently pursuing under the Rio Trio Initiative?
Babayev: We are focusing on several initiatives, such as reforestation projects that enhance biodiversity and combat desertification, and implementing sustainable agricultural practices that preserve soil health. Additionally, we are fostering programs that engage local communities in conservation efforts, ensuring that they benefit directly from preserving their natural resources.
Editor: Engaging local communities is crucial. How do you envision the role of international collaboration in achieving the objectives of the Rio Trio Initiative?
Babayev: International collaboration is absolutely essential. Climate change knows no borders, and many of the factors that contribute to environmental degradation are global. Therefore, partnerships with other countries, NGOs, and international organizations can facilitate technology sharing, funding for innovative projects, and the exchange of best practices. Through these collaborations, we can strengthen our resilience and push forward towards achieving a sustainable future together.
Editor: It’s inspiring to hear about such proactive steps. As you mentioned the interconnectedness of environmental issues, what would you say to those who might still view them in isolation?
Babayev: I would urge them to consider the broader picture. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and desertification are not just environmental issues; they have profound implications for human health, food security, and economic stability. By recognizing their interconnections, we can develop more robust policies and strategies that address the root causes rather than just the symptoms, ultimately creating a healthier planet for future generations.
editor: A powerful message,Mr. Babayev. As we look ahead, what do you see as the biggest challenges and opportunities for Azerbaijan in aligning with the goals of the Rio Trio Initiative?
Babayev: The biggest challenge is certainly the scale of investment needed to implement these comprehensive solutions, especially in a rapidly changing climate. However, this also presents a unique opportunity to innovate and lead in areas such as renewable energy and sustainable resource management. Azerbaijan is rich in natural resources, and we can leverage this to build a green economy that not only addresses environmental issues but also enhances our economic development.
Editor: thank you, Mr. Babayev, for sharing your insights today. Your vision for integrating environmental stewardship with economic development is both timely and essential. We look forward to seeing how Azerbaijan continues to progress within the framework of the Rio Trio Initiative.
Babayev: thank you for having me. It has been a pleasure to discuss these important issues, and I look forward to continuing the dialog on how we can collectively work towards a sustainable future.
