Back to school, Newton high school halved classes due to absences of staff and students. Principal: “Worry about the next few days”

by time news

We go back to school after the winter break, but the classes are half-empty between staff and students in quarantine or positive for Covid. As in many other schools in Italy, the high school Newton in Rome he starts again with dozens of absences: 13 among the teachers, two among the administrative staff, which add up to 80 positive boys and the same number in quarantine. “This is a hybrid situation and it cannot be said that school is restarting in its entirety“, Explains the principal of the institute, Cristina Costarelli, who is also president of the National Association of Presidents for Lazio. “Almost all the classes are halved and it is feared that within a few days entire classes will be able to go far”. Speaking with time.news, Costarelli also underlined the difficulties of organizing mixed teaching and guaranteeing complete days. “Management is already very complicated. We have no possibility to replace teachers. We cannot guarantee the full time, we have to get some classes back in hours before. We have thousands of classes in ddi, which is a hybrid mode, not a full didactic, and very tiring due to the interactive modes. At Newton we have experienced it all last year, but it must be understood what can be better or more appropriate in such a particular moment. Given that face-to-face teaching is ideal, we believe that the adoption of a limited period of distance learning for everyone would have been desirable, also because, as we expected, many families are already not sending their children to school for fear of contagion. . These are children perhaps waiting for the dose of vaccine or traveling by public transport. These students will have neither face-to-face nor remote teaching. A fact that we could have avoided instead of aggravating the general disorientation “
