Bandung Zoo: Tiger Cubs Die from Feline Panleukopenia Virus

Two eight-month-old Bengal tiger cubs have died at Bandung Zoo in Indonesia, succumbing to the highly contagious and often fatal feline panleukopenia virus (FPV). The deaths, which occurred on March 24 and 26, 2026, have prompted concern among wildlife officials and veterinarians, highlighting the vulnerability of young felines to this devastating disease. The Bandung City Government and the West Java Natural Resources Conservation Center confirmed the cause of death following a veterinary examination.

Feline panleukopenia, often called “feline distemper,” is a highly virulent disease caused by a parvovirus. According to Pranyata Tangguh Waskita, Director of the Veterinary Hospital at Padjadjaran University, the virus boasts a morbidity rate – the proportion of animals infected that show symptoms – of up to 100%, and a mortality rate, or the proportion who die from the infection, of 80-90%. This makes it particularly dangerous, especially for animals with developing immune systems. The virus is remarkably resilient, remaining stable and infectious in the environment for several months.

A Threat to Rapidly Dividing Cells

The virus specifically targets cells that are rapidly dividing, making young animals particularly susceptible. “This panleukopenia virus particularly likes cells that are rapidly dividing, such as those in the digestive tract of young animals,” explained Pranyata. The felidae family – encompassing not only tigers but as well domestic cats, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and jaguars – are all at risk. Young animals are especially vulnerable due to their incomplete immune systems and the waning protection provided by antibodies received from their mothers.

Transmission of FPV occurs easily through direct contact with infected animals, via bodily fluids like feces, vomit, urine, saliva, and nasal secretions. Indirect transmission is also common, with the virus spreading through contaminated objects such as food and water bowls, cages, shoes, and even clothing. Fleas and ticks can also act as mechanical vectors, carrying the virus from one animal to another. Importantly, Pranyata confirmed that, as of now, the virus does not pose a threat to human health.

How FPV Attacks the Body

The severity of FPV stems from its attack on the body’s primary defense system: the bone marrow. The virus destroys the cells responsible for producing white blood cells (leukocytes), leading to a drastic reduction in their numbers – hence the name “panleukopenia,” meaning a deficiency of white blood cells. This leaves the animal severely immunocompromised and unable to fight off secondary infections.

The clinical signs of panleukopenia are often dramatic and rapidly progressive. Animals experience severe dehydration due to relentless vomiting and bloody diarrhea, and are unable to absorb nutrients, leading to rapid weight loss and energy depletion. Other symptoms include loss of appetite, lethargy, a sunken appearance to the head, dull fur, unresponsiveness, and a tendency to seek out dark, secluded spaces. Initially, body temperature may spike to 40-41 degrees Celsius, but can plummet to dangerously low levels as the disease progresses. While some animals may survive, they can exhibit lasting neurological issues like incoordination, tremors, and staggering.

Pranyata emphasized the critical window for intervention: “The critical period of this disease is around 5-7 days from the initial appearance of these symptoms. If the animal can survive beyond seven days, it can be saved as long as This proves provided with intensive care by a veterinarian.” This intensive care typically involves 24-hour hospitalization, fluid infusions, and antibiotic treatment to combat secondary bacterial infections.

Prevention Through Vaccination and Hygiene

Early detection is crucial, and rapid tests utilizing a lateral assay system can effectively identify FPV infection through saliva or fecal samples. However, the most effective defense against panleukopenia is vaccination. For domestic cats, vaccination is considered mandatory, with initial vaccinations administered at 6-8 weeks of age, followed by a booster one month later, and then annual boosters thereafter. Pranyata stressed that animals must be in good health to receive the vaccine.

Beyond vaccination, strict hygiene protocols are essential. This includes thorough disinfection of all equipment used with sick animals, complete isolation of infected individuals, and the use of protective clothing – including changing clothes, gloves, and dedicated footwear – by caregivers. “It is better to care for healthy animals first before tending to sick animals, to prevent the transmission and spread of this disease,” Pranyata advised.

In the case of the Bandung Zoo tiger cubs, secondary infections likely exacerbated the severity of the illness, taking advantage of the weakened immune systems caused by the virus. Veterinary officials are conducting further investigations, including necropsies – dissections of the carcasses – to examine post-mortem pathological changes in the intestines, glands, and bone marrow. Rapid tests on fecal samples, histopathological examinations to identify viral inclusion bodies within cells, and PCR testing to detect the virus’s genetic material are also underway to confirm the diagnosis and gather further information.

The loss of these young tigers is a stark reminder of the constant threat infectious diseases pose to vulnerable animal populations, both in captivity and in the wild. Zoo officials are reviewing their existing vaccination protocols and biosecurity measures to prevent future outbreaks. The West Java Natural Resources Conservation Center is expected to release a full report on the incident and any resulting policy changes within the coming weeks.
