Violence once again plunges Mexico into mourning. A shooting left six dead in a bar in the state of Jalisco, a region in the west of the country where criminal groups operate, local authorities said on Saturday.
The shooting took place late Friday evening in the town of Teocaltiche, during celebrations for the anniversary of Mexican independence, the state prosecutor said. “Several people were shot dead in a bar in the Maravillas neighborhood,” he said.
An anti-drug campaign launched in 2006
The state of Jalisco is shaken by the violence of the New Generation cartel, one of Mexico’s main criminal groups. Teocaltiche, north of the state capital, Guadalajara, experienced a shooting on September 2 which cost the lives of two police officers.
Since the federal government launched an anti-drug campaign with the support of the army in 2006, more than 340,000 murders and some 100,000 cases of disappearances have been recorded, most of them linked to criminal organizations.
