Barry Manilow, the iconic singer-songwriter behind hits like “Copacabana,” announced Monday that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer and will need to reschedule upcoming concert dates for surgery. The 82-year-old artist shared the news in a statement posted on Instagram, detailing how the diagnosis came after a prolonged struggle with bronchitis.
According to the statement,an MRI scan revealed “a cancerous spot” on one of his lungs after he experienced six weeks of bronchitis, followed by a five-week relapse while performing a residency in Palm Springs,California. “As many of you know I recently went through six weeks of bronchitis followed by a relapse of another five weeks,” Manilow explained. “Even though I was over the bronchitis and back on stage at the Westgate Las Vegas, my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK.”
The MRI ultimately led to the discovery requiring surgical intervention. “The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed,” he stated. Despite the serious diagnosis, Manilow expressed optimism, noting, “It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early.” He is scheduled to undergo surgery to remove the spot.
Fortunately, initial assessments are encouraging. “The doctors do not believe it has spread, and I’m taking tests to confirm their diagnosis,” Manilow shared. He playfully added,”So,that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns.”
Manilow recently completed a series of Christmas performances at the McCallum Theater in Palm springs. His January concert dates will be postponed to allow for recovery following surgery. The singer reassured fans of his commitment to return to the stage, aiming to perform Valentine’s Day weekend in Las Vegas, were he holds a lifetime residency.
Originally scheduled to tour U.S. cities starting in early January, including arenas in Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia, those shows will now be moved to February, March, and April, according to the singer’s website.Manilow also plans to continue his tour in the United Kingdom later this year.
Acknowledging the inconvenience to his fans, Manilow expressed his regret.”Just like you, we were all looking forward to the January shows and hate having to move everything around.” He concluded with a hopeful outlook, stating, “In the meantime, I’m counting the days until I return to my home away from home at the Westgate Las Vegas for our Valentine’s weekend concerts on February 12-13-14 and throughout 2026.
