Leroy Sané’s assault: Should he have been thrown off the pitch?
December 1, 2024 – 7:55 p.mReading time: 1 Min.
In the top game against Borussia Dortmund,Leroy Sané hits himself with an elbow. The fact that he doesn’t fly off the field is probably due to the reaction of his opponent.
The Bundesliga duel between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern ended in a 1-1 draw - but a scene from the second half is still something to talk about a day later. The focus: Bayern striker Leroy Sané and an elbow strike against BVB professional Pascal Groß.
During a Bayern attack, Sané is closely covered by Groß. The Bayern striker suddenly and jerkily pushes his arm back and hits his opponent in the face. Groß touches his face briefly, but doesn’t fall to the ground – probably crucial to the fact that neither referee Sven Jablonski nor the VAR recognize the scene.
Referee expert Thorsten Kinhöfer attested to Sané’s luck in an interview with the “Bild” newspaper: “If Groß drops down and holds his face,as most players do these days,it will probably be considered assault.”
According to Kinhöfer, the VAR should actually have become active: “Even if it doesn’t hit him fully – sané swings, and that’s a blow. That’s clearly in the direction of violence.” According to Kinhöfer, the assumption of a reflex is not plausible becuase Groß pushed Sané slightly but did not hold him down.
Sané and FC Bayern were probably lucky that the scene had no consequences.
